ICE 1: WATER ICE CLIMBING and ICE 2: WATER ICE LEAD CLIMBING combo training offers a combination of instruction, demonstration, and guided practice with a experienced MAA instructor taught outdoors in a small group setting. Completion will prepare you for success as an beginning level or intermediate level ice climber and help you be better qualified to attend MAA events. Maximum of 8.

For Apex members only, upgrade as a renewal here. You can attend either training on the same day. Please indicate on your registration and the class will be adjusted accordingly.

We'll do the following for those who are attending ICE 1:

  • Top rope steep water ice climbing

  • Ice tool technique

  • Crampon footwork technique

  • Crampon footwork technique

  • Top-rope belaying
  • Climbing communication

  • Lowering on top rope

  • Resting on route

 We'll do the following for those who are attending ICE 2:
  • Lead climbing or mock lead climbing on water ice

  • Placing, assessing, clipping and cleaning ice screws

  • Building and assessing multi-point ice anchors

  • Refined ice climbing technique

  • Strategy, resting, and picking a line

  • Racking and preparation

  • Lead belaying

  • Route planning

FOR: All Apex members who have viewed the companion online training and/or have completed the prior level outdoor training, or have appropriate experience on their MAA profile. Ideally you will have done at least 50 top rope climbs before attempting to lead.

MEET: At the Mobil Station at the junction of Hwy 120 and Hwy 395, just outside Lee Vining, CA.

WHAT TO BRING: All items on the gear list below

PERSONAL GEAR: Members are encouraged to use your own equipment. If you're missing something, loaner gear may be available. Please let the instructor know if you need something.

CLOTHING

  • Wicking, breathable base layer, top and bottom

  • Insulating, weather-resistant mid layer, top and bottom

  • Wind and waterproof shell layer, top and bottom

  • Insulating fill or down belay jacket, w/hood

  • Socks

  • Gloves and/or mittens

  • Gaiters

  • Sunglasses

  • Warm hat and/or balaclava

EQUIPMENT

  • Backpack - save space for group gear

  • High energy food, snacks and drinks

  • Freeze-proof water bottles or container system

  • Strong headlamp with fresh batteries

  • Sunscreen

  • Small personal first aid kit

  • Optional items for consideration: altimeter, trekking poles, camera, small knife or multi-tool, bandana

CLIMBING GEAR

  • Ice climbing or mountaineering boots

  • Harness*

  • Climbing helmet*

  • Sharp steel crampons, fit to your boots*

  • Ice tools*

  • 2 locking and 2 non-locking carabiners*

  • Two tied or sewn runners, 24" to 48"*

  • 16” loop of 4-5mm cord as a prusik*

  • Cordellette or quad, 5mm - 7mm, 15' - 20'*

  • Auto locking belay device*

  • Ropes, ice protection, slings* (may be group gear)

*If you are without some of this important safety gear, it may be available for loan upon prior request, first-come, first serve. Please contact the event leader.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • This event is for current APEX members only

  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.

  • The training event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.

  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
