Register

Join MAA members on a climb of Mt. Shasta via the classic north side route. The Hotlum-Bolam ridge traverses a scenic high line between these two glaciers topping out on the summit ridge. Proficiency in self arrest and steep snow climbing is required. Loaner gear may be available. We have room for 8. Hope to have you out with us!

DETAILS:

  • What's happening: Ascent of Mt. Shasta 14,179 via the Hotlum-Bolam Ridge route, steep snow up to 50 degrees, 7,000' ascent. 
  • Where to meet: In the town of Weed, exact location TBD. Details will be worked out with registrants. 
  • Event Leader: Doug Harris
  • Minimum / Maximum: 4,8
  • Skills and Experience: Recommended for those proficient with self-arrest and climbing steep snow (55 degrees) in crampons: SNOW 1 and SNOW 2, and proficient in mountain travel and camping, MTN 1.
  • Fees / Regulations: There is a fee to climb, $25 per instance or $30 for the year. You will also need to pack out all solid waste. Blue bags provided. Both can be handled at the trailhead. Please see info here.
  • What to bring: List will be sent in body of registration confirmation email

  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.
  • Additional Info: Shasta summit pass is required

ITINERARY:

  • DAY 1: Friday, July 10th. Drive to Weed, meet and greet. Caravan to the Northgate trailhead. Gear and packing. Make the approach to arrive at basecamp at 9,500 before dark. Prep for early start.
  • DAY 2: Saturday, July 11th. Pre-dawn start to attempt summit, descend back to basecamp. 
  • DAY 3: Sunday, June 12th. Return to trailhead, or a day for contingencies. 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • In order to register you must be a Base or Apex member.
  • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
  • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
  • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
