Join MAA members for a winter climb and training on Castle Peak. This is a moderately steep, technical winter ascent of the highest point in the Donner Pass area near Lake Tahoe. Summiting the pinnacle will require ascending a fixed line and rappelling off the backside. Participants will receive training and gain experience in ROCK 2, SNOW 1, SKI 1 and MTN 2. Prior experience snow climbing, snowshoeing / skiing, ascending fixed lines and rappelling is recommended, as well as fitness to handle a long day out! Loaner gear may be available. We have room for 10. Hope to have you out with us!

DETAILS:

  • What's happening: Castle Peak 9,103 near I-80. Ascending snowy trail and slopes via snowshoes, skis, or crampons. 6 miles total, 2,000' total gain. Use of fixed lines and rappelling to ascend and descend from the highest point. Maximum 45 degrees snow. Always the possibility of avalanches and winter weather - be prepared. We will not carry beacons but will carry shovels and probes, and will assess and avoid avalanche terrain. MAA will supply ropes and manage the technical climbing.
  • Where to meet: Exit 176 off I-80 at the Sno-Park, 7:00 am. Sno-Park pass required! Get yours online, at the Boreal Inn, REI or The Backcountry in Truckee.

  • What to bring: Sno-Park pass, warm mountaineering boots, mountain axe*, crampons compatible with your boots*, helmet*,  lightweight harness*, belay device*, 4-6 mm prusik*, 2 locking carabiners*, two double length slings*, gaiters*, 2 pair of gloves, backpack, 2 liters of water, food for the day, balaclava / neck gaiter, beanie, sunglasses, trekking poles with snow baskets, climbing layers including puffy with a hood (wicking, warm, waterproof), compass, map, first aid, recommend hand warmers. (*If you are without some of this important safety gear, it may be available for loan upon prior request, first-come, first serve.)
  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.
    IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
    • In order to register you must be a current Base or Apex MAA member.
    • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
    • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
    • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
    • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
    • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
