Join MAA members at Rubicon Peak in Tahoe for some amazing backcountry skiing. This is one of the most accessible and popular skiing destinations on the west shore, with a variety of terrain and incredible views of Lake Tahoe. Current Avalanche 1 training and avy gear required to attend. We have room for 8. Hope to have you out with us!

SCREENED EVENT: Please join the waitlist. Attendees will be selected based on skill proficiency and experience shown on MAA profile, including evidence of Avy Level 1 and equipment. Those registered will be notified.

DETAILS:

  • What's happening: Backcountry skiing on Rubicon Peak, 9,183, laps on bowls and faces with tree cover.
  • Where to meet: 8:00 am at 8914 Highview Dr via CA-89 S. Directions: 

    1. Head east on Donner Pass Rd toward Meadow Way

    2. Turn right onto CA-89 S

    3. At the traffic circle, continue straight to stay on CA-89 S

    4. At the traffic circle, take the 1st exit and stay on CA-89 S

    5. Exit the traffic circle onto CA-89 S

    6. Turn right onto CA-89 S/W Lake Blvd

    7. Turn right onto Scenic Dr

    8. Turn right onto Woodland Dr

    9. Sharp right onto Brook Dr

    10. Turn left onto Crest Dr

    11. Sharp right onto Forestview Dr

    12. Turn left onto Highview Dr

    13. Sharp right onto Highland Dr

    14. Arrive at location: 8914 Highview Dr


  • Event Leader: Stephen Moeller
  • Minimum / Maximum: 4,8
  • What to bring: Skis, boots, skins, poles, avy beacon, probe, shovel, appropriate winter clothing and layers, lunch, water, pack and sense of adventure!
  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.
  • Additional Info: While winter driving expect storms, carry chains and plan extra time for treacherous conditions.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  • In order to register you must be a Base, Peak, or Apex member.
  • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
  • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
  • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
