Join MAA at Basin Mountain to climb the East Couloir. This Eastern Sierra giant and neighbor to Mt. Humphreys is right out of Bishop, with a wide couloir offering a straightforward way to it's 13,240 summit. Recommended for those with backcountry travel and navigation skills, and experience scrambling rock and climbing moderate snow. Loaner gear may be available. We have room for 8. Hope to have you out with us!

DETAILS:

  • What's happening: Basin Mountain, East Couloir Route, Class 4, approx. 3,500 ft gain, basic snow climbing / rock scrambling, overnight, off-trail, 4x4 is recommended.
  • Where to meet: Bishop, CA White Mountain Ranger Station at 7:00 am, Oct. 12th
  • Event Leader: Kevin Koenig
  • Minimum / Maximum: 3,8
  • What to bring: Clothing and footwear appropriate for moderate snow climbing (boots probably) and 4th class mountain scrambling. Crampons, ice axe, helmet, possibly trekking poles(s), camping gear including sleeping bag, tent (may be shared), stove, food, water, first aid, personal items, headlamp, etc. An alpine harness may be useful for contingencies and if we do end up using a rope. Currently we are not planning on using a belay system. We will review individual and group gear before heading out.
  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.
  • Additional Info: Permits are required for overnight stay and will be acquired on Oct. 12th or sooner.

ITINERARY:

  • DAY 1: Saturday, October 12th. Meet in Bishop at 7:00 am at the White Mountain Ranger Station. Team orientation, permits, logistics. Caravan to the Horton Lakes TH. Hike up Basin Mountain to the bivy spot in the cave or another aesthetic location. 
  • DAY 2: Sunday, Octoer 13th. Complete the ascent up the East Couloir climbing rock and possibly snow to the summit, then descend the couloir or an alternate route back to the TH, and back home. 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • In order to register you must be a Base or Apex member.
  • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
  • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
  • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
