Join MAA members on Mt. Shasta to ascend the Green Butte Ridge. This date immediately follows the ICE 4 training.  This climb requires steep snow and self arrest proficiency. Loaner gear may be available. We have room for 10. Hope to have you out with us!

  • What's happening: Green Butte Ridge climb, steep snow or alpine ice (45 degrees), 7,000' total ascent over two days, likely 4,000 ascent from basecamp.
  • Where to meet: If coming in on Sunday, May 26th meet at 9:00 am, Rite-Aid off I-5 exit 738, in Mt. Shasta. Groups are also meeting at this same time and location on Friday and Saturday. Caravan to the trailhead and come in as a group. Darren will already be at basecamp.

  • Fees / Regulations: There is a fee to climb, $25 per instance or $30 for the year. You will also need to pack out all solid waste. Blue bags provided. Both can be handled at the ranger station or at the trailhead. Please see info here.

  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.
  • Additional Info: Shasta summit pass is required


This climbing event will share the same basecamp as three ICE-R training events and another MAA sponsored Shasta climb this weekend. Parties will be coming and/or going on all the days between Friday, May 24th and Tuesday, May 27th.

Coordination: Use the member's forum posting for this event. Be sure you meet up with the group going into basecamp that day at 9:00 am at Rite Aid in the city of Mt. Shasta. Then caravan to the trailhead and go in together in groups of two or more. Do not go into camp or return to the trailhead alone.

  • DAY 1: Sunday, May 26th. Meet at 9:00 am, Rite-Aid off I-5 exit 738, in Mt. Shasta, for logistics. Caravan to trailhead. Make the approach to arrive at basecamp before dark. Prep for early start. Or you may already be in basecamp if you attended an earlier ICE-R training event.
  • DAY 2: Monday, May 27th, Memorial Day. Pre-dawn start to attempt summit, descend back to basecamp.
  • DAY 3: Tuesday, May 28th. Weather / contingency day. Heading home.


  • In order to register you must be a Base, Peak, or Apex member.
  • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
  • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
  • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
